Blog Post: Laying the Foundation for a Family Day

May 27, 2025

I woke up this morning before the sun—before most people are even thinking about getting out of bed—and found myself walking under a sky still holding on to the stars.

Out back, the concrete crew was already getting to work.

At three in the morning, they were prepping the foundation for a house.

And it hit me: the most important things—the lasting things—don’t get laid in daylight.

They get poured in the quiet.

In the cold.

In the dark.

Before anyone’s watching.

That’s when the real foundation work begins.

I came back inside through the garage, heart full of metaphor and concrete dust in the air. Barbi had just come in, and we talked. Not small talk—the real kind. The kind where you lean into God, not away. We prayed. We laughed. We talked about Bella. About us. About all the little things that aren’t little at all.

I talked to Randy too. We didn’t solve the world’s problems.

But we laughed like we did.

It was grounding.

Bella was getting ready. I caught her in one of those passing moments—those blink-and-you-miss-it shifts where a daughter goes from mystery to miracle. We talked about the day. About her idea to go bowling. About life.

Barbi and Bella left to run errands.

I stayed home.

I showered. Cleaned up. Dressed.

Fresh shirt. Fresh breath.

Fresh perspective.

Now they’re back. And we’re about to go.

We haven’t even bowled yet…

And still, I already feel it:

Today is a day that’s going to matter.

Not because of the score.

But because of the story.

We’re building something in our family that’s deeper than plans.

Stronger than circumstance.

Poured in prayer, laughter, trust—and the kind of love that shows up early and lays it all down like wet cement.

It’s setting now.

And it’s going to last.

Time to go bowl.

Waiting and Uncertainty

This morning I reflect on waiting and uncertainty and how both can feel like quiet teachers. Waiting is not empty. It is practice. It is the slow strengthening of patience. And uncertainty is not puni
